Rex is a gentle, laid back, easy going boy who has the calm and affectionate personality that makes greyhounds such wonderful family companions.

He already walks very easily on a leash, stands quietly for a bath or to trim his nails, and is easy to groom and work with.

He gets along well with the other greyhounds in his foster home, and enjoys roaming around his fenced yard.

He showed a little too much interest in the cats when we took him to meet some cats, so we would not recommend him for a home with cats or tiny dogs.

He would do fine with a medium size or larger dog.

Rex is one greyhound who will bark to remind you when it is time for his dinner,

if he hears something outside, needs to go out, or hears you come in after being away from home, so he will need to go to a house rather than an apartment or condo.

He might even turn out to be a rare greyhound watch dog!

Rex is an average size greyhound boy at 77 lbs. He just came to us after finishing his racing career, so he is still in an athletic condition and will be about 2 lbs. heavier as a pet with a more sedentary lifestyle.

Rex came to us from a very good racing kennel, where he was much loved.

His owner has sent along a beautiful hand crafted leather collar which will go with him to his new home.

Rex is a confident and mature fellow at 4 years old.

We believe he will be able to go just about anywhere with his new family and do well.

Since Rex has the temperament and confidence to be an outstanding "prison dog"., so we have chosen him for the prison training program at Hardee Correctional Institution, which the inmate trainers refer

to as Hardee Hero Hounds.

Rex will begin training on April 20th, and when he graduates on June 22nd, he will know all of his basic commands:

sit, lie down, heel, go to place (his bed or mat), wait at the door, come on

recall, and a few other commands which his trainer will choose.

Greyhounds that are prison trained are highly sought after, so if you are interested in Rex or any of our prison trained greyhounds, please contact us right away.

Rex did quite well as a professional athlete,

You would never know how fast he was on the track by his easy going demeanor around the house.

Rex competed in 130 races at the Derby Lane track in St. Petersburg and had 30 wins!

He reached the level of Grade A racer, which means that he was one of the fastest greyhounds on the track.

As with all racing greyhounds, after awhile Rex lost a little speed, which can be just 1 mile per hour, and was retired.

His last race was on February 18th,

An interesting fact about Rex is that his father, a famous greyhound and top sire named Trent Lee, set the track record at Derby Lane Greyhound Track 12 years ago.

Rex's $450 adoption fee includes his neuter, teeth cleaning, vaccines, Bordetella (to protect against kennel cough), microchip, leash and collar, adoption guide, BAGA identification tag, 9 weeks of specialized training, and 30 days free health insurance. Your adoption fee helps us to defray some of the veterinary and care costs we have incurred for Rex, and will help us to continue our work on behalf of the greyhounds.
